The Cold Ones are the only remaining enemy of the Quileute people. From then on, Edward had been his son and closest friend. After dinner as always, Edward did not eat , in Edward's car on the way back to Forks from Port Angelos, Bella confronts Edward with what she has learned from Jacob. Edward says that Alice has seen a storm coming, and Jacob says he can feel its approach. Bella argues that if she and Edward are too far apart, they will both be too worried about each other and both of them will be vulnerable. Bella asks her father why he never remarried after the divorce with Renee.
Both Bella and Jacob know she is seeing another vision.
Seth recovers and seizes Riley, dragging him away. So ancient enemies, vampires and werewolves, join forces to protect Bella and solve both problems -- before the ancient Italian vampires intervene. The newborns won't smell Bella past the battlefield, only the smell of werewolf which they won't be able to stand. Jacob says he didn't want to be so forward, but there's no time left; she needs to hear the truth.
She responds wildly and kisses him back passionately. Edward and Bella fill out college applications, while Bella explains to Edward her desire to see her werewolf friend Jacob again, so she can make things right with him.
But Jacob, as a werewolf, has a scent that vampires find so repellent that it will mask Bella's trail effectively. He knows she was heading to the reservation, and Bella realizes that Alice saw it, and that Edward rigged her truck to not be able to start, in order to prevent her from driving there. He takes her to the nurse, mocking her for her intolerance for so little blood. Edward also dispels the myths that they sleep in coffins and have no reflections. The newborns are being created to destroy someone or something-- the Cullens are the only vampire family close enough to be targets.
Blatant emotional blackmail is unattractive whatever way you serve it up and it detracted from his otherwise fine character. Only Rosalie doesn't like her which is unexplained until the sequal "New Moon". Jacob enters the tent, having heard Bella's soft moans of discomfort. Carlisle knows that if the Cullens don't stop the newborns, the Volturi will arrive to do so-- he's surprised they haven't stepped in yet. This means she must be carried to the campsite where Edward will be guarding her-- and Edward cannot carry her there because the newborns will still be able to pick up Bella's own scent. He restates his request for Bella to marry him.
Jasper is satisfied that the newborns will have no knowledge of the Quileute wolf-pack, thus giving them and the Cullens an edge, in addition to sufficient numbers. She begs him not to be reckless, and when he won't listen to her reason, she goes into a near-panic and asks him to kiss her. The reason she couldn't remember anythign was because she had been locked away in a dark cold hole of an insane assylum because of her visions. Plus, there is a lot more suspense in this entry than in last two in the Twilight series, as well as a pretty entertaining climactic battle though much of it happens offstage. However, he left them because he couldn't stand their blood-soaked and ruthless lifestyles. Eventually, Carlisle ended up in America, and discovered his talent for being a doctor. Edward is amused that Bella is letting Alice plan the whole affair out.
